19 startups have been selected for the 2022 Mobility Lab. In the coming months, they will be connected with an appealing first customer so that they can validate their innovation in the real world, under the motto of the program: “Don’t just talk – test!”

Startups from all over the world working on Mobility projects have applied to be part of the 2022 Mobility Lab 9-months program. The 19 startups will test their innovative solutions in the Netherlands, in the regions of Rotterdam, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, or Utrecht.

Hans Stevens of the Municipality of Rotterdam, who founded Mobility Lab in 2017, said: “Once again we are surprised by the creativity of the startups for this 6th edition of Mobility Lab! We see practical applications and solutions that can make people’s lives healthier and more liveable. We also see a trend: there are more solutions for parts of mobility concepts, but fewer disruptive concepts as a whole. We will use that insight to ensure that the upcoming editions of Mobility Lab remain relevant.”

Testing with launching customers

In the coming months, Mobility Lab will set up speed dates to link the selected startups with so-called launching customers. These are parties with a specific mobility problem that could possibly be solved by innovation. Once an ideal match is found between the startup and the launching customer, a tailor-made innovation pilot is developed, after which the mobility solution is taken from the drawing board and tested in the real world.

“Mobility Lab will introduce the startups to more than 100 different companies and governments in the coming months,” says Paul Bevers, Innovation and Development Team Leader of the SmartwayZ.NL program. “For example, Ahoy Rotterdam, Achmea, Brabant Mobility Network, and Zuid-Limburg Ookbaar are participating. It is a nice mix of organizations that support smart mobility and want to give the startups a big boost. In this way, the selected startups will ultimately contribute to a smarter mobility system and thereby a safer, cleaner, more sustainable, and more accessible Netherlands”.

Throughout the Netherlands and abroad, work is being done to achieve sustainable and smart mobility in the safest possible way. In this year’s various Mobility Lab entries, sustainability is a top priority. For example, work is being done on 100% fossil-free, off-grid charging hubs for electric cars and trucks and on revolutionary high-pressure air motors for the propulsion of all vehicles and vessels that currently use diesel, petrol, or gas. A startup has also been selected that wants to make energy accessible everywhere by means of a solar panel that’s easy to use and transport.

Safety is another key topic. For example, a startup has been selected that offers a safer way to moor at a quay or lock by means of a sensor solution. Another startup taking part ensures that data is sent between machines and infrastructure in a reliable and secure manner, something playing an increasingly important role also in the world of mobility.

Another one of this year’s innovations aims to make driving experiences more pleasant and, above all, safer by making the driver aware of things like fatigue, aggression, fear, and distraction while driving. Shared transport will be included in this year’s cohort of startups too. Example solutions include neighborhood parking facilities filled with shared transport, as well as customized delivery of shared electric cars from a zip code pool and a SAAS platform for organizing and optimizing shuttle services for employees. This latter system also offers the possibility to accurately map CO2 emissions and the reduction of employee transport. From January 2023, this will become mandatory for companies with more than 100 employees.
