As the US Open continues to captivate tennis fans around the world with its exhilarating matches and iconic moments, the iconic tennis tournament is also making strides off the court with its ambitious sustainability initiatives. Here’s a look into some of them.

Sustainability Initiatives at the US Open

The Mayor’s Food Plan: A Recipe for Change

Mayor of New York City Eric Adams, renowned for his advocacy of plant-based diets and environmental health, has launched broader efforts to combat climate change with his Food Sustainability Challenge. The US Open accepted the mayor’s challenge, focusing on reducing food waste through sustainable practices and promoting plant-based meals.

By embracing Mayor Eric Adams’ Food Sustainability challenge, the US Open has aligned itself with New York City’s sustainability goals, adding a fresh layer of eco-consciousness to an already green event.

Beyond the Court:

This year, the tournament continues its commitment to environmental stewardship through several key programs:

  • Energy Efficiency: The US Open recently employed energy-efficient lighting and cooling systems, reducing energy consumption across the massive venue. As a result, the US Open has seen a 34% reduction in energy consumption since 2017. By investing in renewable energy, the tournament also offsets 100% of its electricity use.
  • Waste Management: The US Open implemented recycling and composting programs, significantly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. As of 2023, the event reported a 97% diversion rate of waste, indicating that almost all the waste was either recycled or composted. This year, the tournament shifted gears towards single-use plastics. New reusable water bottles and compostable food containers are readily available throughout the venue. Moreover, the 2.4 million napkins in the general concession area are made of 100% recycled materials.
  • Sustainable Sourcing: From food to merchandise, the US Open prioritizes sustainability for all goods sold. Through partnerships with local farms and wholesale suppliers, the tournament ensures that food items are sustainably sourced, with an emphasis on plant-based and organic options. In 2023, the US Open sourced over 70% of produce locally, reducing carbon emissions from transportation and waste.
  • Eco-Friendly Staff: To create the most environmentally friendly tournament possible, the US Open provides green fashion to its employees. For example, Ralph Lauren provides uniforms for tournament ball persons, with fabric created from recycled water bottles. Furthermore, tournament racquet stringers no longer use plastic wraps for the thousands of racquets strung throughout the three-week event.

A Blueprint for Future Events

By accepting Mayor Adams’ challenge and continuing to expand its green initiatives, the US Open is not just a sports event; it’s a trendsetter for how large-scale gatherings can be part of the solution to the climate crisis. The tournament’s comprehensive approach — from energy use to food sourcing — demonstrates that sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into any event without compromising the experience.

The US Open is serving up more than just thrilling tennis; it’s also serving a brighter, greener future for us all.
