When you biked last time, have you ever felt the need for a little help, probably when going uphill? Maybe all you needed was an electric boost, or better a PikaBoost.
PikaBoost is a new device by Livall. The company, launched in 2014, sells several products to make biking easier and safer. One of their most interesting ones is a smart helmet with integrated braking lights. PikaBoost is the latest product they brought out.
PikaBoost allows everyone to install a lightweight electric motor on their bike. The device only weighs three kilos, it is small, but it contains so much technology. The regenerative power system is at the heart of this device, allowing for regenerative electric power. There is also an e-brake, a fall detection system, and a sensor for terrain change. PikaBoost can also connect via Bluetooth to your device to control some of its features.
The greatest innovation of PikaBoost is, however, that it does not need electric power to be charged. The device gets fully charged by getting connected to the rear tire of a bike. The process is so simple and can be seen in the video below.

PikaBoost was on Kickstarter since the beginning of November. It went really well with over 2,300 subscribers and almost one million euros pledged. It is not surprising to see this much success, considering that all PikaBoost competitors are either more expensive, harder to install, or just heavier.
PikaBoost electric power can be deployed in many ways. If you are riding on a steep climb it can give you the extra boost to get to the top. If you are riding on a flat land PikaBoost can help you maintain your speed. Finally, if you are on riding in traffic – with lots of starts and stops – this electric motor can help with that as well.
Ideas like PikaBoost, are a perfect example of tech solutions that can support sustainable living. Which other technology should we review next? Let us know from here.
