Today, on his social media, Truth Social, Trump said: “I love Ukraine, but Zelenskyy has done a terrible job, his country is shattered, and millions have unnecessarily died. Zelensky better move fast or he is not going to have a country left.”
If “he is not going to have a country left,” it will be entirely your fault, Mr. Trump, and learn your history: Zelenskyy is not a dictator because he didn’t hold elections, as you alleged today; elections get postponed in times of war, that’s what happened in the UK during World War II, so why not in Ukraine?
And please stop lying! Contrary to what you said yesterday, Ukraine did not start the war, it was your dear old friend Putin who did: On February 24, 2022.
And if you had been President back in 2022, Putin would have started the war anyway: He’s not your puppet. Just because he gave you an Addidas soccer ball for your son the last time you saw him in Finland, he’s not your buddy. He never was America’s buddy, and he never will be. Don’t forget that, Mr. Trump.
Putin, a former KGB agent suffering from increasing bouts of nostalgia for Soviet grandeur, wants to restore the Soviet Empire when Ukraine was part of it. So that’s exactly what he’s doing and you could never have stopped him.
But why all these sudden lies and attacks against Ukraine and its President just now, as you’ve started negotiating with Russia? There is, of course, a reason for all this show of accusations and lies: It nicely lays the ground for handing over Ukraine to Russia. Or if the “Ukraine peace negotiations” that began yesterday in Ryad fail, lay the blame on Ukraine.
Mr. Trump, we all see through your game: You promised your fans that you would “end the Ukraine war” within 24 hours of entering the White House. Since that turned out to be unrealistic, you gave yourself a new deadline: six months.
But now you’ve devised a clever trick to end it sooner and make yourself look good, the great “deal maker”: You got your diplomats together with Russia out there, in Saudi Arabia, leaving Ukraine and Europe out of the negotiating room. The plan is clearly to bow down to Putin and accept all his requests, both territorial and political (no, Ukraine, you are never going to get into NATO!).
And guess what: Ukraine, which has been fighting so hard and lost so many lives, will not give in, and it is sure to decline.
But you, Mr. Trump, will turn around and say to the world:
“See, I had found a beautiful way to end the war, a beautiful solution, saving lives! Beautiful! I love peace! But the war continues and it’s all Ukraine’s fault! I had the solution, and Zelensky blew it! And you know why? Because that’s the only way he can stay in power: by continuing the war. There, I told you before, and I say it again now: Zelensky is a traitor to his nation, he is a true dictator!”
So that is Trump’s way: Use false information and fake news to distort the facts.
But what are the facts?
What History teaches us: Holding an election in wartime, the UK example
The most famous example is that of the world’s oldest democracy, the United Kingdom. During World War II, the British Parliament faced the end of its term, in 1940 to be precise, and the election was indeed delayed due to the ongoing war. Here’s why:
Normally, a British Parliament’s term lasts a maximum of five years. With World War II raging, holding a general election was deemed impractical and disruptive. Millions of citizens were serving in the armed forces, making it difficult for them to vote: And that is precisely the case in Ukraine.
Additionally, the political focus was entirely on the war effort: And that is also the case in Ukraine.
So how did it work out in World War II? The existing Parliament, elected in 1935, had its term extended by special legislation. This was done to avoid the instability and division that a wartime election might cause.
Once the war in Europe ended in May 1945, the situation changed: Expect that to happen to Ukraine too. The need for a fresh mandate became clear, especially with the significant social and political changes that had occurred during the war. The postponed general election was finally held in July 1945. As we all know, it resulted in a landslide victory for the Labour Party, and Winston Churchill was replaced by Clement Attlee as Prime Minister.
A similar destiny might await Zelenskyy after the war is over. But in the meantime, what was good for Winston Churchill is good for Zelenskyy.
Mr. Trump would do well to remember this instead of throwing Ukraine under the Russian bus.
And there’s a lesson here for Europe too: America is no longer an ally, it has become an adversary. The post-World War II era has ended, America’s friendly support of Europe is no more.
In practice, Putin has managed to peel off Trump from the Western alliance, weakening NATO. Putin must be gloating. And you can be sure that Xi Jinping is happy too.
