The Benefits of Using Enterprise Resource Planning Software for Large Businesses

If you are a large-sized business, you surely have an inordinate amount of company material to work with. Finding efficient ways to store and utilize this material can be a major challenge, so it is essential that you find the right software program to help stay organized.

Enterprise Resource Planning Software is becoming a standard for large businesses. There are numerous benefits to be gained by utilizing this type of software, and it will benefit everyone in your company. And also those that you collaborate with on the outside.

Software for all businesses

With the right ERP software, you will not only be able to manage your company’s daily activities, but also analyze them and better plan your future sales and marketing strategies.

The brilliance of Enterprise Resource Planning systems is that they bring all of a company’s information together and integrate it into a common whole. This allows data to be shared between departments and eliminates the possibility of human error in making calculations or entering data manually. They also eliminate the possibility of accidental data duplication by creating single fields for particular data.

Benefits of using ERPs

As mentioned above, there are innumerable benefits to the use of ERPs such as OpenBOM. These include:

  • Reduced operational costs. When a company invests in an ERP, managers save countless hours of what would normally be spent manually entering, calculating, and analyzing data.
  • Reduced error in calculations. Even the most skilled financial experts are subject to human error. With integrated ERPs, calculations are made automatically, and information is automatically saved in all the relevant places.
  • Better opportunities for collaboration. When everyone on a team has access to the information they need, there are much greater possibilities for interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Consistency in formatting and infrastructure setup. With ERPs, companies don’t have to worry about different people formatting data in different ways. Everything is standardized, and data sharing is streamlined.
  • Higher user levels. When a software system is easy to use, people are more likely to take advantage of it. If a whole team is trained simultaneously in the use of an ERP, everyone will be on the same page and will be able to take part equally.

Who can use an ERP?

Businesses of all sorts can use Enterprise Resource Planning software to their advantage. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Manufacturing companies. ERPs are beneficial to these companies in keeping track of inventory, meeting quality standards, handling procurement, and determining better and worse performing products.
  • Retail companies. ERPs help retail companies organize their various channels, including brick and mortar stores, e-commerce outlets, and any other sales channels. Data is stored centrally and used for identifying, purchasing, and shipping. Software also helps companies better understand customer behavior, cart abandonments, and similar processes.
  • Service companies. Service companies of all sorts can benefit from ERPs. This includes legal services, tax companies, and even engineering companies. Systems help companies effectively utilize their resources, manage projects, and keep on schedule.
  • Wholesalers. ERPs assist wholesalers and importers with managing distribution costs, inventory, and reducing their order-to-cash periods. The inventory management and logistics capabilities of ERPs can keep business processes moving smoothly throughout companies. They also increasingly allow for customized and automated processes, which makes employees’ jobs easier.

Enterprise Resource Planning ERP software includes accounting software processes, vendor procurement, human resources, supply chain, and more.

Components of ERP systems

To appreciate the value that ERP systems provide companies, it is important to understand how they function.

ERP systems consist of some number of modules that are connected through a common database. Modules are usually divided by business functions (financial management, human resources, etc), but all the data is integrated and can be accessed if a company chooses to make it open. Both text data, as well as images can be integrated into a system.

Another advantage of ERP systems is that they meet industry-specific requirements, and can be set up in such a way that they automatically update when legal or other requirements change.

ERP systems can be considered groups of systems. They are connected to customer relationship management (CRM) software, e-commerce platforms, and any other solutions particular to a given industry.

ERP deployment types

There are different ways that ERPs can be deployed, depending on a company’s size, setup, and goals. These include:

  • On-premise. On-premise ERPs are those that exist only on a company’s own server within its physical office. This type allows companies to control EPS components more than other types, but it requires that employees be on site to use it.
  • Cloud ERPs. There are also ERPs that exist in a cloud, which gives companies greater flexibility in their physical locations and allows for the use of Software as a Service (SaaS) to install, maintain and update systems. It also helps reduce costs and increase scalability.
  • Two-tiered. Some companies go through periods where they need two separate, discrete systems, if for example they are in the process of going through a merger or an acquisition. These ERP setups can involve both an on-premise system, as well as a cloud-based system. In these cases, companies have the option of moving data from the physical server to the cloud as they wish. A similar model, known as the hybrid model, is also an option.
