Today’s ESG Updates

  • India Boosts LPG Output Over Supply Fears: India has imposed refinery LPG production targets and storage requirements to protect domestic cooking-gas supplies after Strait of Hormuz disruption hit Middle East imports.
  • Peter Thiel Bets $76 Million on Argentina’s Vaca Muerta Shale Boom: The Palantir co-founder has bought a 1% stake in Vista Energy, gaining exposure to Argentina’s major Vaca Muerta oil and gas formation.
  • Hull Begins Work on Waste-Heat Network Expansion: George Street will close for three weeks as Hull installs pipes for a district heat network using energy from waste to supply city-centre buildings.
  • CIP Closes $3bn Fund for Emerging-Market Renewables: CIP raised $3bn for renewable-energy projects across growth markets, with $1.6bn already committed to nine investments

India boosts LPG output over supply fears

India has ordered refiners to maximize LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) output at 63,810 tonnes per day and strengthen storage and transport capacity after Middle East supply disruptions exposed its dependence on the region, which previously supplied about 90% of its cooking-gas imports. Reliance is assigned 18,000 tonnes/day, while ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corp), Oil India, and GAIL together are expected to provide 10% of the national target; targets will be reviewed twice yearly.

India’s order for its refineries to maximise LPG output is seen as a short-term energy-security intervention rather than a structural fix, as it will cushion the availability of household LPG. Still, domestic refinery flexibility and logistics will constrain future gains. India’s exposure to supply risks offers a lesson for countries reliant on imported energy, reinforcing the case for diversifying suppliers, building larger strategic buffers, and accelerating the adoption of electrification and clean-cooking alternatives.

Peter Thiel bets $76 million on Argentina’s Vaca Muerta Shale Basin

Palantir chair and co-founder Peter Thiel has taken a 1% stake in Vista Energy, worth roughly $76 million, through his hedge fund, Thiel Macro LLC. The acquisition gives him exposure to Argentina’s fast-growing Vaca Muerta shale basin, as Vista Energy currently produces around 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and has invested more than $6.5 billion in Argentina; the purchase followed Thiel’s April meeting with Argentinian President Javier Milei.

The investment is seen as Thiel’s targeted bet on Milei’s market-friendly policy agenda, Argentina’s potential to scale hydrocarbon exports, and Vaca Muerta’s globally significant resource base. It also fits Thiel Macro’s wider energy-heavy portfolio. For Argentina, it is a useful confidence signal, but translating resource scale into sustained returns still depends on infrastructure, regulatory stability, access to capital, and resilience to oil price fluctuations.

Hull begins work on waste-heat network expansion

Hull, England, will close part of George Street for roughly three weeks from August 17 to install pipes for its district heat network, which will distribute waste-derived heat from a Trippett Street energy centre to city-centre buildings. The first phase targets 38 buildings and is projected to save 110,000 tonnes of CO₂ over 40 years; it is supported by £15m from the Green Heat Network Fund, £1.5m in Levelling Up funding, and a £27m government loan.

Hull’s council hopes to set an example of place-based heat decarbonisation; leveraging otherwise wasted heat can cut building emissions without requiring each property to install individual low-carbon systems. However, its climate and financial value will depend on reliable heat demand, efficient network operation, and managing construction disruption while expanding customer connections.

CIP closes $3 million fund for emerging-market renewables

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has raised $3 billion for its second Growth Markets clean-energy fund to finance large, complex greenfield renewable energy projects in 15 high-growth middle-income markets. Thus far, CIP has already committed $1.6 billion to nine investments, spanning Chilean battery storage, Mexican solar-plus-storage, and Romanian renewables.

The raise signals sustained institutional appetite for transition infrastructure beyond mature Western markets, where power-demand growth and grid constraints create a stronger investment case for integrated generation and storage. However, the strategy’s returns will hinge on managing country-specific currency, permitting, offtaker, and grid-connection risks.
