How Sustainable Is SKIMS?

In the contemporary world, few names carry as much weight as Kim Kardashian. As a global icon, her sway reaches far and wide. It’s no surprise that SKIMS, her brainchild, quickly rose to prominence as a worldwide icon in lingerie.

Yet, the Kardashian empire continues to expand. Introducing the SKIMS Ultimate Nipple Bra marks a daring departure from conventional intimates.

Imagine a bra that makes it seem like you’re not wearing one, even in scorching heat. This is the bold promise of the SKIMS Ultimate Nipple Bra, as Kim Kardashian whimsically asserts, “No matter how hot it is, you’ll always look cold.”

Although SKIMS is becoming the world’s favorite lingerie brand, one crucial question arises: How sustainable it is?

Philanthropy with a Twist: The Environmental Commitment

Beyond the campy, retro-inspired PSA and the playful slogans lies a philanthropic commitment. According to SKIMS, 10% of the bra’s proceeds will be towards 1 % for the Planet, an organization dedicated to global environmental causes.

While Kim Kardashian’s AD promoting her new bra garnered attention, some users expressed concerns. In fact, one commented: “kind of a slap in the face to our current climate crisis but okay…”. Could fashion truly make a positive impact amidst pressing global issues?

SKIMS sustainability: What does SKIMS have to say?

SKIMS addresses sustainability in its FAQ section. In the statement, we read: “At SKIMS, we are committed to the highest ethical standards and legal compliance in all aspects of our business and product supply chain. We only work with suppliers and vendors we believe in and share our commitment to sustainability, accountability, and transparency.” This is all. Brevity is of course always commendable, but this is a statement that leaves a lot unsaid.

Assessing SKIMS’ Sustainability Efforts: A Closer Look

We analyzed the sustainable efforts of SKIMS and discovered a multifaceted approach to ethical practices. In 2021, the brand faced a challenging moment when it became entangled in a legal dispute involving seven former employees who claimed they hadn’t received their rightful wages.

SKIMS has since stated that all their warehouse and factory workers are guaranteed “fair wages, safe environments, and healthy working conditions.”

However, the definition of “fair wages” remains unspecified, leaving room for interpretation and concern. This incident underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability within the brand’s operations.

Eco-Chic Packaging: A Green Revolution or Greenwashing?

Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS has taken a bold step towards eco-friendliness by using FSC recycled paper boxes and compostable, eco-friendly bags instead of plastic and non-recyclables.

However, recent scrutiny raises pertinent questions about the authenticity of these claims. In 2022, SKIMS faced allegations of ‘greenwashing’ after its packaging practices were found to potentially contradict its stated commitment to environmental consciousness, especially concerning plastic usage. The brand’s assertion of removing all non-recyclable materials from its packaging, while a positive step, invites a closer examination.

It’s hard to tell if SKIMS is making sustainable progress or if their efforts are merely for show. With greenwashing and fast fashion so pervasive in our environment, it falls on icons like Kim Kardashian to set a new industry standard.

We crave brands founded on responsibility, transparency, and genuine progress. The legacy of SKIMS hinges on its contribution to a sustainable world. Kardashian possesses the platform and the financial heft; the challenge is to lead authentically, forging a path toward a responsible fashion industry.
