Europe experiences a record-breaking heatwave
A massive heatwave, which will see records broken in June, is melting Western Europe, with temperatures reaching 44°C in Spain and 43°C in France. The latter put half of its territory, with 35 million people, under a red alert.
But the effects have spread beyond Western Europe’s borders: Belgium had to cancel rush-hour trains due to concerns about track failures. In Spain, authorities canceled a World Cup screening. The German tennis final was postponed due to lightning. The Met Office issued extreme heat warnings for the UK, with a 38°C forecast — way above the 35.6°C record for June, set in 1976. 800 French schools were shut down, and another 1,800 were let out earlier. Paris reduced regional rail service.
Night temperatures are also breaking all-time highs, leaving no time for recovery. Scientists report that such extreme heat, which used to occur only in summer, arrives earlier and lasts longer.

Five Eyes on frontier AI dangers
Intelligence agencies from the Five Eyes nations (the United States, the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand) have issued a rare and alarming joint statement: “advanced artificial intelligence models that could be used against government or commercial cyber defenses are months away.”
“Frontier AI models are anticipated to exceed current industry expectations,” reads the statement. “The timeline is not years, it is months.”
The newest iteration of Mythos, called Fable 5, has recently been suspended for non-US nationals, as officials deemed it a security threat. The capabilities of Mythos in cybersecurity are vast, but at the same time, it’s a huge cyberattack risk. Only a select few trusted organizations can use it for now.

Battery swapping from China for UK to make EV transporting financially better
The Chinese CATL Group has partnered with Octopus Energy, the UK’s largest household energy supplier, to build more than 30 battery-swapping stations by 2035 to power electric lorries more efficiently. The main problem the decision addresses is the about-an-hour time required for fast charging right now.
Battery swapping is also beneficial for upfront investment in EVs, because operators don’t need to own the batteries. On the other hand, the service stations, which governments are expected to treat as critical infrastructure, will be owned by truck manufacturers and fleet managers rather than CATL or Octopus Energy. The first power stations are expected to hit the UK next year, following the widespread effective implementation in China.

China is a leader on climate change in the aftermath of the US leaving the Paris Agreement
China’s environment minister stated in Brussels on Monday that global climate cooperation will not stop or become slower after Washington abandoned the common goal completely. It was a clear attempt to fill the gap created by President Donald Trump’s January announcement of pulling the United States out of the Paris Agreement.
The Chinese environment minister was giving his speech at a climate conference jointly organized by China, the EU and Canada. Despite China’s domination of solar panel and electric vehicles markets, climate, for the time being, appears as a domain where cooperation is feasible.
The Iranian war disrupting the flow of oil and gas worldwide is a perfect illustration of how green transition and energy security can not only coexist, but complement each other as well.
