European Union one percentage point away from reaching 2030 goals
The European Union is on track to cut carbon emissions by 54% by 2030, only one percentage point short of the desired 55% reduction compared to 1990 emission levels. Despite criticisms and protests, many countries have remained steadfast in their commitments to this goal, increasing their efforts over the last two years. According to the latest data, carbon emissions in the EU have decreased by 37%, even as the economy continues to grow. Transport and agriculture are trailing behind other sectors, such as renewable energy, which accounts for 24% of energy consumption in the EU. Companies within the EU can stay on track to meet 2030 goals with ESG solutions.

Brazil sues BYD over poor workplace conditions

The Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD is facing a lawsuit in Brazil due to “slavery-like” working conditions. Brazilian labour prosecutors are seeking 257 million reais ($45 million) from BYD and two other contractors, China JinJiang Construction Brazil and Tecmonta Equipamentos Inteligentes. The prosecutors are claiming that the workers in these factories are victims of international human trafficking, having been brought to Brazil illegally and forced to live in inadequate conditions with limited ability to leave. The Brazilian prosecutors reassured both governments that the lawsuit is not a result of anti-Chinese sentiment and plan to pay the workers their fair share from the lawsuit.

EU to invest €150 billion in new defence systems

The Council of the European Union adopted the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument on Tuesday. This program aims to increase defence systems and security throughout the EU, offering support to member states as needed. The Council plans to allocate €150 billion to expand investments in air defence and drones, as well as ammunition and infantry on the ground. SAFE will be crucial in providing further support for Ukraine, and the program will also allow countries that have signed Security and Defence Partnerships with the EU, such as the United Kingdom, to join forces. These investments aim to strengthen defence readiness across Europe. Social and environmental governance remains important in defence investments. Ensure proper methods through utilizing ESG tools.
