Alia Malik

Alia Malik is the Chief Development Officer at Better Cotton, the world’s largest cotton sustainability programme. Alia is often considered the in-house entrepreneur at Better Cotton, helping modernise and reimagine their work from the inside-out. Alia brings a deep commitment to the SDGs and a breadth of experience across social enterprise, nonprofit management and UN organisations. Before coming to Better Cotton, Alia founded two social enterprise start-ups: Shangrila Farms, which connected Chinese farmers and consumers in ethical trade in the fast-moving consumer goods sector in China, and FarmSmart, an international education app for smallholder farmers.

Since the first Better Cotton harvests in 2010-2011 the initiative has expanded rapidly. In the 2021-22 cotton season, through our network of field-level partners, 2.8 million farmers in 22 countries received training on sustainable farming practices, and 2.2 million farmers received Better Cotton licences. Over one fifth of the world’s cotton is now grown under the Better Cotton Standard.

Better Cotton’s ambitious 2030 Strategy lays out our aim to at least double Better Cotton production by 2030 and deepen our impact to help the cotton sector address its many urgent and complex challenges. To achieve deeper results it will be necessary to work in new ways and build new systems. To be sure they’re making a tangible difference, Better Cotton is also developing higher standards of traceability and becoming more data powered, from farm to retail.

Alia Malik serves on the Board of the International Cotton Association. With degrees from Cambridge and Georgetown University, Alia is American and Pakistani and based between London and Austin, Texas.
