Gardening activities are healthy and fun. They benefit the body, brain, and soul, and are great for enjoying quality time with your children. Kids not only learn about science, nature, and the importance of contributing to Mother Earth but also about patience, compassion, and trust. All you need are a few tools to get started. Having a schedule and working with short projects is also helpful. Need some ideas? Check out these top five gardening activities you can enjoy with your little ones.

Build a worm compost

There are great benefits to creating a worm farm including adding precious nutrients to the soil. And kids will dig the squiggly extras. Both Toms of Maine and A Few Shortcuts offer top tips to create a worm farm with your children.

Create a butterfly garden

Butterflies bring out the kid in all of us. Choosing the right areas for planting, and proper host and nectar plants are key. Check out Kids Gardening and the National Garden Bureau for essential guidelines on butterfly garden activities.

Grow some herbs

Herbs not only add flavor but also offer children a hands-on experience with the farm-to-table process. The Herbal Academy and Gardening Know How have some helpful hints for child-friendly herb gardens, including herbs for pizza.

Plant some roots

Root vegetables can be planted outdoors or inside as a window garden. A few simple tools are all you need for an exciting science-based, kid-friendly activity. Get the scoop to create these gardens at What We Do All Day and Pre-K Pages.

Engage the senses

Creating a garden with scents, textures and colors offers children a positive relationship with nature and engages them in the entire gardening process. The Kids Garden and Growing Minds provide a few winning how-to’s.
