Why Is it so Difficult to Delete a BeReal and Other Social Media Content?

Why Is it so Difficult to Delete a BeReal and Other Social Media Content?

Social Media tend to become less user-friendly when users need to remove a post or decide to delete their accounts

If you decide to delete a BeReal, you might think it is an easy process. It is actually not. The app only allows users to delete one post every twenty-four hours. Why BeReal makes it so difficult? Why it is so hard to remove content from social media in general?

How to actually delete a BeReal post

As we have seen before you only have two minutes to post your BeReal. To delete a BeReal is much more difficult. You can only delete a BeReal once per day. If you do so, you will no longer be able to see your friends’ posts until you post another one. Once and if you post another one, you will not be able to delete it for 24 hours.

Furthermore, before deleting the post, you will receive a warning and you will be asked to complete a survey. Only after that, you will be able to delete your BeReal.

Delete a BeReal is quite challenging.

Why is it so difficult to delete content from social media?

BigTech apps like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok have this bad “habit” of keeping track of many of your online activities. For them, it is crucial that users stay online and post content. If users start to remove altogether their content, this would be huge damage to these apps.

When Instagram launched the memories archive it was built for that purpose. BeReal does have a similar archive too. Will that be used like Instagram in the future?

How to delete a BeReal account?

Social networks in general don’t like to make your life easier once you decide to delete an account. BeReal is no stranger to this method so if you are looking to delete BeReal you need to find the “delete my account” feature which is sneakily hidden in the “contact us” section of the app.

Once you choose that, the app will run another survey. It will ask you the reasons why you want to delete your BeReal account. You are also given the option to change your mind.

If you still choose to delete your account, you will have fifteen days to log in again. If you don’t, after a total of thirty days your account will be fully deleted.

The thirty days timeframe is quite a standard feature also for other social media platforms. TikTok has a similar policy. While Instagram makes it extra complicated by requiring users to log in to the web browser first and then choose the delete account option from there.

While retaining users is crucial for social media, these social media apps should strive to be user-friendly at all times. Deleting an account should be as easy as creating a new one.
