When in Rome: How to Do as the Romans Do

When in Rome: How to Do as the Romans Do

Navigating the streets and historical landmarks of the Eternal City can be a daunting task, especially for first-time visitors. Here some tips from locals that will help to avoid the most common mistakes

To truly immerse oneself in the wonders of Rome, it is vital to avoid common mistakes often made by tourists.

By familiarizing themselves with the local culture, customs, and language, travelers can forge deeper connections with the city and its inhabitants.

So, when in Rome, remember to embrace the saying and do as the Romans do!

From planning reservations in advance and dressing appropriately to exploring off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods and savoring genuine Roman cuisine, here are some tips from locals that will ensure an enriching and authentic experience in the Eternal City.

Do Not Overplan

Full of magnificent landmarks and hidden gems, Rome offers a treasure trove of experiences for eager tourists.

But here’s a friendly tip: don’t try to squeeze it all into a day! Slow down, embrace the “sweetness of doing nothing,” and savor the enchantment at your own pace.

There’s so much to see, but remember that quality over quantity is the key. Instead of rushing through a checklist, prioritize the must-see sights, give yourself the gift of time to explore the iconic landmarks, savor the local cuisine, and venture into the lesser-known neighborhoods.

Rome is a city that unfolds its secrets to those who immerse themselves in its charm.

Do Not Plan a Short Visit

Two days or a weekend? Not nearly enough!

Even the Romans themselves spend a lifetime exploring their city. So, why not dedicate a full week to Rome?

Parco degli Acquedotti and the fascinating architecture of Rome Universal Exhibition (EUR), an urban and architectural complex in the south-west of Rome, are just a taste of the treasures awaiting you. And so are the  nearby cities of Ostia, reachable just by the metro, and Santa Marinella, just one hour away by train, to enjoy some refreshing time on the beach.

By venturing off the beaten track, you’ll also have a chance to experience the real essence of Roman life, mingling with the locals and immersing yourself in the vibrant culture.

Do Not Underestimate the Importance of Reservations

Remember, Rome is a city that beckons to millions of eager visitors each year. To make the most of your time and ensure a smooth and enjoyable adventure, a little planning goes a long way.

Since the city is constantly buzzing with tourists from far and wide, to avoid long queues and disappointment, it is crucial to make reservations for popular attractions, such as the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel, in advance.

Additionally, booking tables at renowned restaurants allows visitors to relish authentic Roman cuisine without waiting for hours.

Do Not Eat at Tourist’s Traps

When it comes to dining in Rome, steering clear of tourist traps is an absolute must. Many popular tourist areas are lined with restaurants that prioritize quantity over quality.

Seek out “trattorias” and “osterias” frequented by the locals. These will transport you to the heart of Rome’s culinary scene.

Here, you’ll discover authentic Roman dishes crafted with fresh, locally sourced ingredients — from mouthwatering pasta dishes to delectable supplì (fried rice balls).

Most importantly, avoid ordering a cappuccino after noon (cappuccino is only for breakfast). If you find yourself in need of a little boost  during the day, “espresso” will be the solution for you.

Rome is a gastronomic paradise, but avoiding tourist traps is key to unlocking its true flavors. Do the research, plan ahead, and create your own culinary adventure.

Do Not Visit at Peak Season

When it comes to visiting Rome, timing is everything. While the allure of summertime adventures might be tempting, it’s wise to consider avoiding the peak season, especially if you’re not a fan of scorching temperatures.

Summers in Rome can be unforgivingly hot, with intense heat waves making it challenging to explore the city comfortably. It would be wise to escape the heat and embrace the charms of off-peak Rome.

By opting to discover Rome outside the peak season, you open the door to a multitude of advantages.

Spring and autumn offer milder weather, making it easier to wander around and fully absorb the city’s enchantment.

Moreover, venturing off-peak allows you to experience Rome’s cultural scene in a more intimate and authentic way.

Museums, galleries, and theaters offer a treasure trove of art, history, and performances year-round. With fewer visitors, you can immerse yourself in the masterpieces at your own pace.

By following these easy tips you will be able to ensure that every moment in the Eternal City is a truly unforgettable experience.
