On Monday, ICLEI, a partner of Impakter, will be hosting Daring Cities 2021, a global virtual forum that aims to help urban leaders take action on the climate emergency. The virtual forum will be held between the 4th and 8th October.

This is the second year that ICLEI has held this forum. Last year’s forum saw the “largest gathering of the online community on the climate emergency to date,” according to Daring Cities. The event drew 4,500 attendees, including 150 mayors and the UN Secretary General.

ICLEI is a global network of more than 2,500 local and city governments. ICLEI believes we need to make “deep civilization-wide changes” by 2030 to limit the worst effects of climate change. This forum aims to facilitate discussion on how to make radical changes to cities and urban areas across the globe.

The event is also being hosted by the federal city of Bonn, a city in West Germany.

For the 2nd consecutive year, Impakter has partnered with @ICLEI for their @daringcities forum for urban leaders tackling the #ClimateEmergency!

Katja Dorner, mayor of Bonn and ICLEI Global Executive Committee Member, said that “This year saw climate-change-induced climate disasters, with untold costs for our cities and regions.

We want to show what leadership looks like in times of climate emergency. Cities and regional leaders, and our many partners will come together, to engage in dialogue and exchange, as advocates for the world we want.”

The forum will involve hands-on training from city leaders, experts and researchers over the space of five days. The event looks to kick off Urban October, a month that UN-Habitat has dedicated to focusing on creating conversations about sustainable urbanisation.

This event also celebrates the city of Bonn’s 25 years of being a UN City. It acts as the base of operations for the United Nations within Germany. It contains more than 20 UN entities, and serves as a “hub of sustainability” for intergovernmental organisations, businesses and NGOs.

Daring Cities also looks to bring ideas such as sustainable urban development to the fore ahead of the Cop26 summit in November. World Habitat Day falls on the first day of this forum (4th Oct.). The theme for this year is “accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world”.

The event is free for all those who wish to attend. You can register today at https://daringcities.org/.
