How to Find a Reliable Criminal Defense Lawyer

Being charged with a crime you may not have committed is one thing you wouldn’t want to experience. Aside from the possibility of having your record tainted, you also have to go through a lengthy legal process.

You have a right to get a public defender to help you navigate your charges, but success isn’t guaranteed, especially if your case requires considerable attention and resources. On the other hand, a private criminal defense attorney provides access to the experts and resources you need to build your case and ensure that you get the best possible outcomes.

If you want to focus on getting one instead of a public defender, you just need to make sure they’re the right lawyer for your situation. Here are a few tips to help you with that.

1. Prioritize Specialty

Criminal defense lawyers can handle a wide range of cases, from handling DUI charges to dealing with medical malpractice lawsuits. You might feel like a lawyer who can handle multiple cases is the best one to get, but they may not be well-rounded in your specific case.

You need someone with experience handling similar cases before or, a lawyer who specializes in certain areas of criminal defense and practices within the locality where you are charged. If you are a New Yorker charged with drug trafficking in Atlanta, consider firms like Garland, Samuel & Loeb Drug Trafficking Attorneys instead of reaching out to lawyers focusing on the broader field of criminal defense.

2. Learn About Their Experience

Focusing on specialization helps you narrow your options to a few attorneys or firms that fit your situation. However, when it comes to ensuring successful legal outcomes, you need people who are not only competent but also highly experienced. That’s not to say neophyte criminal defense lawyers aren’t worth checking out, but you need someone who has delivered reduced sentences and had charges dismissed due to lack of merit.

As you scout for criminal defense attorneys online, dig deeper into the cases they’ve won and the people they represent. If your situation calls for quality legal defense, you should deal only with battle-hardened firms and practitioners.

3. Review Any Ethical and Professional Violations

Even if you have reached out to an attorney who is both competent and experienced, you still need to make sure that their professional record is kept clear of violations. Some attorneys, although well-versed in the law, may have been cited for contempt many times. Others could have had issues with maintaining client trust and providing quality representation.

It pays to know that the person defending you from a lengthy prison sentence conforms to the standards of their practice. With this in mind, find out if the lawyer you’re communicating with has been flagged for courtroom violations and Bar infractions. You can check out your local Bar association’s records or contact previous clients and ask them about the lawyer’s technical knowledge and communication skills, as well as the outcomes they delivered.

4. Make the Most of the Consultation

If you’re confident about the defense lawyer you’ve chosen, you still need to vet them based on factors below the surface. Knowing whether they truly fit the bill requires meeting them during an initial consultation and laying out the details about your case.

As they analyze your situation, listen to how fast they fully understand it and craft a legal strategy from scratch. It also helps to talk about their fee structure and whether they require a flat fee or retainer, depending on your needs.

Endnote

Taking all this together, you should be able to come up with criteria for choosing a criminal defense attorney who can get you out of trouble. That way, there’s assurance that the fallout from your charges won’t significantly upend your life.
