Europe heatwave damages crops and raises food price fears

Food price concerns have grown after record June temperatures damaged grain crops across Europe. Around 9 million tonnes of wheat, barley, maize and oats are expected to be lost, with the value of the damaged harvest estimated at €2 billion. The EU and UK are forecast to record their smallest grain harvest since 2018 after crops were affected by prolonged heat during key stages of development.

France is expected to record the largest grain losses, followed by Hungary and Spain. Farmers across the UK have also reported poor growing conditions after a dry spring and June heatwave, with lower yields and earlier harvesting expected in several regions. The reduced harvest is also expected to increase Europe’s reliance on grain imports.

France wildfire forces thousands to evacuate

More than 10,000 people have been evacuated after a rapidly spreading wildfire burned through around 2,000 hectares of land in southwestern France. The blaze broke out west of Bordeaux near the Arcachon Bay area, with around 500 firefighters deployed to contain the fire. No injuries have been reported, although the wildfire has continued to spread through forested areas.

The evacuation comes after Europe experienced three major heatwaves this year, increasing wildfire risks across the continent. More land has already been burned in Europe this year than the annual average recorded over the past two decades, according to available data. Many of those evacuated were tourists staying at nearby campsites.

European Commission reaffirms social rights agenda

The European Commission has adopted a new Communication reaffirming the European Pillar of Social Rights as the EU’s framework for promoting fairness, social protection and equal opportunities. The plan sets out new priorities to address rising living costs, prepare workers for changes driven by artificial intelligence and reduce inequalities across the bloc.

The Commission will launch a consultation with social partners on improving labor market participation for people facing barriers to employment. A new high-level group will also be established to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market. At the same time, further proposals on job quality and employment are expected later this year.

OpenAI-backed data centre changes cooling plans

Plans to cool a major OpenAI-backed data center in Australia with recycled water have been abandoned after developers were unable to secure approval for the infrastructure needed to deliver the supply. The 612-megawatt facility, expected to be one of the world’s largest AI data centers, will instead use a waterless cooling system based on liquid coolant and electrically powered fans.

The change is expected to increase electricity demand while eliminating the need for cooling water. The change comes as Australia rolls out new sustainability requirements for data centers, with greater attention being given to energy efficiency and water use as more AI facilities are built.
