Degraded soils threaten Europe’s economy and agriculture as AI offers new solutions

Europe is losing over €50 billion annually due to declining soil health, with scientists warning that erosion, pollution and intensive land use are damaging agricultural productivity and ecosystems. Around 60–70% of European soils are estimated to be in an unhealthy condition. This creates risks for food security and climate resilience. Poor soil quality reduces the land’s ability to store water, support crops and capture carbon. As a result, agricultural lands are increasingly more vulnerable to droughts and extreme weather events. 

Artificial intelligence could help address the crisis by improving soil monitoring, analyzing large environmental datasets and supporting more targeted land management practices. AI-powered tools are emerging as a way to detect soil problems earlier and guide more sustainable agricultural decisions.

Malaysia has maintained strong and resilient economic growth in recent years, but the country needs further reforms to sustain long-term development. According to a new OECD report, enhancing fiscal management and improving productivity will be critical for Malaysia’s future growth.

Boosting productivity remains another key priority, with the OECD recommending stronger competition, simpler regulations and greater support for innovation and business growth. Improving skills development and the quality of education will also be essential to prepare Malaysia’s workforce for future economic challenges.

The report also emphasizes the importance of sustainable growth as Malaysia transitions towards a higher-income economy. Continued policy reforms will help strengthen competitiveness, improve living standards and support long-term economic stability.

EIB invests €260 Million in Poland’s second-largest onshore wind farm

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has put over €260 million ($300 million) into supporting the construction of Miejska Górka, Poland’s second-largest onshore wind farm. With a planned capacity of 190 MW, the project is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power around 200,000 households.

The investment will accelerate Poland’s renewable energy transition by increasing clean power generation and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, ultimately strengthening Europe’s long-term energy security. The project also supports the EU’s climate objectives by contributing to emissions reduction and the expansion of green infrastructure.

Mercedes-Benz and Hydro expand low-carbon aluminium partnership

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its partnership to increase the use of low-carbon aluminium in Europe. The collaboration aims to provide more sustainable aluminium materials for next-generation electric vehicles in order to reduce emissions throughout the vehicle manufacturing process.

A key focus of the partnership is the use of Hydro CIRCAL recycled aluminium, which contains at least 75% post-consumer scrap aluminium from sources such as end-of-life vehicles and construction materials. 

The partnership will also expand the use of Hydro REDUXA low-carbon aluminium, produced with renewable energy to achieve significantly lower carbon emissions than conventional aluminium. The initiative highlights the automotive sector’s shift toward sustainable materials, greener supply chains, and long-term climate targets.
