Environmental groups sue over hidden report undermining U.S. climate rules
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) are suing the Trump administration over its secret creation of a “Climate Working Group” of climate skeptics to undermine the EPA’s landmark 2009 Endangerment Finding. The 2009 finding, based on overwhelming scientific consensus, proved climate change’s human causes and devastating effects. EDF and UCS say the group’s report, cited numerous times by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to justify overturning pollution limits, misrepresents research, hides fossil fuel ties, and violates the Federal Advisory Committee Act’s transparency rules. The lawsuit seeks to block use of the report and protect climate protections, warning that dismantling these standards will heighten physical and financial climate risks. ESG investors and companies can track such regulatory risks and their impacts on sustainability performance using ESG solutions.

South African court halts approval for TotalEnergies oil block

The Western Cape High Court has overturned environmental approval for TotalEnergies’ offshore oil exploration in South Africa’s Block 5/6/7, citing a “deeply flawed” impact assessment. Environmental groups argued the process failed to address key ecological risks, legal requirements, and public participation. The ruling requires Total to reapply and engage the public in a new review, marking another win for activists who have blocked offshore drilling projects in recent years. The decision comes as oil majors target the region following major discoveries in Namibia. For ESG investors, the case underscores growing litigation risks for fossil fuel projects in emerging exploration markets.

U.S. Proposes Nearly $1 Billion for Critical Minerals & Materials

The U.S. Department of Energy has proposed nearly $1 billion in funding to strengthen domestic supply chains for critical minerals. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on imports and support innovations in processing and recycling. The department’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management also intends to announce about $250 million in financial assistance for plants, including coal facilities, that have the potential to produce mineral byproducts from industrial processes. While the funding aims to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign supply chains, the plan relies on domestic mining and processing without any clear environmental safeguards, raising serious concerns about potential ecological and social impacts.
