Tareq Hassan is a seasoned professional with over 12 years of leadership experience in international development and climate change. His work is situated at the intersection of humanitarian aid, environmental conservation, and sustainable development. As the Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Network Canada (SDNC), he leads initiatives to advance environmental action and global sustainability. His expertise spans high-level policy development, stakeholder engagement, and resource mobilization, making him a formidable force for positive change.
Tareq has a distinguished history of shaping policy on the global stage. From 2015 to 2022, he served as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Regional Facilitator for Major Groups and Stakeholders in West Asia, where he was instrumental in developing policy statements and advancing the Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) agenda. His influence was further amplified as the Relations and Communications Manager for the Climate Action Network International (CAN-I) where he coordinated the efforts of over 250 member NGOs. These roles have cemented his reputation as a key voice in international climate negotiations.
His global policy work is grounded in extensive on-the-ground experience in some of the world’s most complex environments. As Program Manager and Acting Country Director for Qatar Charity (QC) in Yemen, he oversaw critical humanitarian and development programs. At the International Youth Council-Yemen (IYCY), he designed resilience-building projects in conflict zones and later spearheaded international partnerships and funding as the organization’s representative. His leadership has also been pivotal in empowering the next generation through his work with the Arab Youth Sustainable Development Network (AYSDN).
Academically, Tareq holds a Master of Science in Management of Sustainable Development Goals from LUMSA University in Italy and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Malaya. His credentials are enhanced by professional training from esteemed institutions like Oxford University and the American University in Cairo. As a fellow of the International School on Climate Mobilities (ISCM) and the Global People’s Summit Fellowship Program, Tareq actively collaborates with leading global institutions, including SOAS University of London and IOM-UN Migration, to advance climate and migration solutions.
