Jose Arias Bustamente

José is a Forest Engineer from the University of Chile. He has collaborated with Indigenous communities in Chile and Canada regarding sustainable forest management. He worked with the Nisga’a Nation in Northern BC, Canada regarding climate change impacts on traditional forest practices (M.Sc.). Currently, he is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia (UBC), a UBC Public Scholar, and a Liu Scholar at the Liu Institute for Global Issues. He is working on a project related to the struggles of the Mapuche Nation (the largest of the first nations in Chile) to recover their ancestral and traditional territories. For the past 5 years, in addition to his studies, he has been volunteering at the Network of Research Chile-Canada (Redicec), first as a member, then as a Finance Director, and currently as Strategic Planning Director.
