Graphyte, a carbon removal startup supported by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, has officially signed its first-ever carbon removal purchase deal with American Airlines.
The aviation giant has committed to acquiring 10,000 tons of permanent carbon removal through Graphyte’s innovative Carbon Casting process, slated for delivery in early 2025.
We have described how the startup’s carbon casting process works in a recent article (you can also watch the video below), but in short, according to the startup: It is the “world’s only carbon dioxide removal approach that is permanent, affordable, and immediately scalable.”
In other words, what makes Graphyte’s carbon removal approach stand out from other carbon removal methods is that it allows for permanent carbon removal and storage using less energy and at a lower cost.
Barclay Rogers, CEO of Graphyte, expressed enthusiasm about the landmark agreement:
“This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both Graphyte and American Airlines. It underscores the increasing demand for affordable, scalable, and high-quality carbon removal credits, highlighting the substantial impact Carbon Casting technology can make in the immediate fight against climate change.”

In a statement announcing the deal, American Airlines writes that it is “investing in a variety of technologies to reduce its carbon footprint” as part of its long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
“American is focused on accelerating new low-carbon technologies to reduce aviation’s climate impact,” said Jill Blickstein, American Airlines’ Chief Sustainability Officer. “Hard to abate industries like aviation will need high-quality, permanent, affordable and scalable carbon credits — including removals — to achieve our emissions reduction goals. We are excited to work with Graphyte to help them scale their important new technology.”
The inaugural commercial-scale deployment of Carbon Casting will occur at a Graphyte facility in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
