RTA Cabinets vs. Pre-Assembled: What to Choose

Every homeowner knows that choosing kitchen cabinets is a critical step in their journey to building a nice and cozy home. Several great options are available. However, two of the most common are RTA or ready-to-assemble cabinets and pre-assembled cabinets. Understanding the pros and cons of each can help buyers make sound decisions.

The choice depends on factors such as budget, time available for the installation, whether you plan to hire professional service or go the DIY route, and more. Your style preferences also help make this decision. In this post, we will discuss both options to enable you to choose the most suitable one for your kitchen.

Understanding RTA Cabinets

Ready-to-assemble or RTA cabinets come in individual pieces and are shipped flat for efficient shipping and storage. Each component, such as doors and hardware, is packaged separately. On-site assembly, generally according to specific instructions, is required after delivery. RTA cabinetry is suitable for DIYers looking to save on labor costs. Compared to custom cabinets that typically take much longer to manufacture and be delivered, RTA cabinets are generally shipped quickly, which shortens your project completion timeline.

The Appeal of Pre-Assembled Cabinets

Pre-assembled cabinets arrive fully constructed, ready for installation as soon as they show up. Assembly is then handled at a factory by professional carpenters or machines. It is a time-saving method for homeowners who appreciate convenience and ease of completion. Pre-assembled cabinets usually come with an assurance of quality, including uniformity and proper alignment, as they are manufactured by skilled workers or machines. They are strong, which is reassuring, especially because kitchens (in most homes) are high-traffic areas.

Cost Considerations

Budget often dictates this decision, prompting buyers to choose one over the other. RTA cabinets are usually cheaper at first. This makes them affordable due to low production and shipping costs. In contrast, pre-assembled cabinets are costlier as they are put together by skilled labor. Plus, they undergo extreme quality checks and manual inspections. The installation fees for pre-assembled units may also be lower since assembly typically takes less time.

Installation Experience

A key factor that distinguishes RTA from pre-assembled cabinets is how these cabinets are installed or put together. Installing RTA cabinets takes time, patience, and skill. Usually, assembly instructions are available, but clarity is key here, as unclear directions or missing parts may lead to mistakes. With pre-assembled cabinets, this risk is diminished as they arrive ready for installation. Pre-assembly makes installation services optional instead of crucial.

Quality and Durability

While the quality may change from one manufacturer to the next, both RTA and pre-assembled cabinets are durable. Most RTA cabinets are made with solid wood, plywood, or premium particle board. Pre-assembled cabinets are manufactured using similar materials, usually with greater care during production. With factory assembly, there is no risk of loose joints or misaligned sections. When assembled correctly at home, you get durable cabinets.

Design Flexibility

Both RTA and pre-assembled cabinets come in different styles, finishes, and colors. Both these options offer customizable features since elaborate combinations are possible. Homeowners can combine different finishes, hardware, and layouts for a customizable, modern look. Since each unit in pre-assembled cabinets is built according to prefabricated specifications, customized sizing options may be restricted. However, many manufacturers offer multiple options in their catalogs.

Shipping and Delivery

Shipping logistics and delivery outcomes for RTA and pre-assembled cabinets differ. Packaged flat, RTA versions ship more compactly and cost-effectively. With smaller boxes, it is easier to ship them without the risk of damaging the contents during transportation, as less effort is needed to handle the boxes. Big box trucks are necessary for pre-assembled cabinets, as extra caution is required to prevent dings or scrapes during transit.

Storage and Space Needs

Accounting for storage requirements can help speed up your decision-making process. Flat-packed RTA cabinets can be the best choice for families with limited cabinetry storage space. Pre-assembled cabinets require more storage space until they are ready for installation. Space is a key factor to consider during large-scale kitchen remodels, especially for smaller homes.

Conclusion

Both RTA cabinets and pre-assembled ones have certain benefits. Based on their specific needs, buyers can choose a suitable option. Research price, durability, installation, and appearance before you choose one for your kitchen. With the right cabinets, you can have a beautiful, fully functional kitchen that serves your family well for years.
