How Startup Vertus Energy Could Revolutionize the Biogas Market

The startup, based in Vienna, promises significant advances in biomethane production

In a landmark achievement for the renewable energy sector, Vienna-based startup Vertus Energy has secured €8.75 million in seed funding to advance its cutting-edge biogas technology and enhance access to biomethane across Europe. This Waste-to-X industrial biotech startup, renowned for its sophisticated control of bacterial behavior, has the potential to revolutionize the biogas market with its innovative solutions.

The robust support from global investors highlights the promise of Vertus Energy’s technology. Vic Pascucci, Managing General Partner and Cofounder of Energy Capital Ventures, emphasized the startup’s superior technology and team, saying:

“As the only venture capital fund solely dedicated to green molecules™, we have devoted the last several years to analysing technologies and start-ups in biogas, biomethanation and renewable natural gas. It was abundantly clear from our exhaustive due diligence that Vertus Energy’s technology, commercial progress and team were far superior to anything in the market. We backed Vertus Energy because they have a fantastic team, clearly demonstrative technology and verifiable results that vastly surpass competitive options.”

Wolfgang Neubert, General Partner at the Amadeus APEX Technology Fund, echoed this sentiment, noting the company’s deep-tech innovation and solid scientific foundation as key factors driving their investment.

Transforming Waste into Renewable Energy

Founded in 2021, Vertus Energy has created BRIO, a biogas technology that generates biomethane around three times faster than current methods. This breakthrough increases energy production by up to 60% from the same waste and is poised to significantly impact the renewable energy landscape, particularly in Europe, where biomethane production targets aim to reach 35 billion cubic meters annually by 2030.

Specifically, BRIO is a modular hardware unit designed to retrofit anaerobic digestion plants, fostering better energy efficiency by controlling existing bacteria over creating new strains. This allows the company to maximize resources, furthering sustainability efforts within waste management.

Vertus Energy is also developing a new carbon sequestration technology called BODA, which converts raw CO2 into renewable natural gas.

The startup’s substantial seed funding, led by Energy Capital Ventures, will be focused on scaling the company’s new BRIO technology. The company hopes to accelerate BRIO’s adoption into commercial units, ranging from full-scale wastewater treatment plants to significantly larger biogas facilities.

With the global biogas market projected to grow at an annual rate of 5.2%, reaching $86.7 billion by 2030, Vertus Energy is well-positioned to make a significant impact. The startup’s mission to provide sustainable energy solutions aligns with broader global efforts to transition to renewable energy sources, enhancing energy security and environmental sustainability.
