Honda 0 Series: Electric Cars That Look Straight Out of the Future

The Japanese carmaker showcases its new "Thin, Light, and Wise" approach to electric vehicle development

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 this month, Honda revealed its new vision for the future of electric vehicles (EVs) with the introduction of the “Honda 0 Series,” the first in its upcoming line of EVs.

This innovative global EV series, which will make its debut in 2026, boasts two concept models: the Space-Hub and the Saloon — the “flagship concept model of the Honda 0 Series, which embodies the ‘Thin, Light, and Wise’ approach,'” as Honda explains.

The rollout will begin in North America, followed by launches in Japan, Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. The series will be introduced alongside the automaker’s new “H” logo.

While EVs generally tend to be “Thick, Heavy, but Smart,” as Honda writes in a press release announcing the new series, the Zero Series follows the company’s new “Thin, Light, and Wise” development approach.

This approach “pursues the possibilities of performance, design, and spatial value,” Honda writes.

The “Thin, Light, and Wise” Approach

The “Thin” aspect focuses on augmenting design potential by going for low vehicle height and “realizing excellent aerodynamic performance by using a ‘thin’ dedicated EV platform to create a low floor height.”

The “Light” principle is meant to redefine the EV driving experience. By leveraging original technologies and returning to the core values of the automaker, the 0 Series aims to deliver sporty driving and remarkable electricity efficiency performance, challenging preconceived notions about the capabilities of EVs.

Under the “Wise” principle, Honda aims to “make cars wiser” through advancements in intelligent technologies. This, the company explains, would be achieved by using Honda’s existing knowledge to realize its “original software-defined mobility products.”

“Although these are different from the current trend of EVs, the true joy of a car should be found in the ride,” Honda President Toshihiro Mibe said. “Considering what a car should be like to please our customers, and by thoroughly thinking through the M/M philosophy and joy of driving that Honda values, we arrived at ‘Thin, Light, and Wise.'”

Honda also lists the following five core values that the 0 Series promises to deliver:

  • Artistic design that evokes resonance
  • AD/ADAS for safety and peace of mind
  • A “space” for people enabled by IoT and connected technologies
  • The joy of driving with a feeling of oneness with the vehicle
  • Outstanding electricity efficiency performance

In the press release, Honda adds that it is also committed to achieving “zero environmental impact” throughout the vehicle’s life cycle and ensuring “zero traffic collision fatalities.” This underscores Honda’s dedication to creating a sustainable and safe future.

In the words of Honda President Toshihiro Mibe:

“The Honda 0 Series will further advance our goals of zero environmental impact and zero traffic fatalities, which I have set since becoming company president. I feel both pressure and satisfaction in facing such a major change, and I hope we will deliver new value to out customers by further evolving the joy of freedom of movement, a core Honda value.”
