India and EU seal biggest trade pact in nearly two decades
India and the European Union have announced a landmark free trade agreement after nearly two decades of negotiations, creating one of the world’s largest trading partnerships spanning a market of two billion people and nearly 25% of global GDP. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the pact as “the mother of all deals,” while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it “historic.”
The agreement will slash tariffs across key sectors, including chemicals, machinery and automobiles, with duties on cars falling from as high as 110% to 10% under a large quota system. India said almost all of its exports would receive “preferential access” to EU markets, benefiting textiles, gems and jewellery, and marine products. Leaders framed the deal as a geopolitical signal amid global trade tensions, with von der Leyen describing it as “a true win-win fashion” partnership and EU Council President António Costa saying it showed faith in “trade agreements rather than tariffs.” Analysts note the gains are significant, but warn compliance with strict EU environmental standards will be crucial.

Spain to regularise half a million undocumented migrants

Spain’s left-wing government is set to grant legal residency to an estimated 500,000 undocumented migrants, allowing them to work legally “in any sector and in any part of Spain,” according to Migration Minister Elma Saiz. She said the policy reflects the government’s commitment to “recognising and respecting” people already living in the country, adding “probably more or less the figures may be around half a million people.” The measure will apply to migrants who have lived in Spain for at least five months and applied for international protection before December 31, 2025, including their children.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended the policy, saying Spain supports a “legal, safe, and orderly migration model” that is also “open and humane.” He argued migration is vital for the economy, noting that immigrant workers account for “80 per cent of the growth recorded in Spain over the past six years” and contribute 10 per cent of Social Security revenues, while irregular migration represents “only six per cent of the total.”

Report finds xAI’s Grok fails basic child safety standards

A new report from Common Sense Media has sharply criticized xAI’s chatbot Grok, finding it unsafe for children and teens due to weak age identification, ineffective guardrails and widespread explicit content. “We assess a lot of AI chatbots… but Grok is among the worst we’ve seen,” said Robbie Torney, the nonprofit’s head of AI and digital assessments.
The report found that “Kids Mode doesn’t work,” explicit material is pervasive, and content can be instantly shared to millions on X. It also accused xAI of prioritizing profits over safety, arguing that restricting image generation to paid users after misuse “is not an oversight… that’s a business model that puts profits ahead of kids’ safety.” Lawmakers echoed the concern, with California Senator Steve Padilla saying Grok “exposes kids to and furnishes them with sexual content, in violation of California law.” The assessment found Grok offered dangerous advice, discouraged professional mental health support, and enabled erotic roleplay through AI companions, raising urgent questions about whether engagement-driven chatbots can adequately protect minors.

US deploys aircraft carrier to Middle East amid Iran tensions

The Middle East has been placed on high alert after the United States deployed an aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, intensifying fears of a possible confrontation with Iran. US Central Command said the deployment aims to “promote security and stability,” while President Donald Trump described the move as sending a “massive fleet” to the region “just in case,” without ruling out military action.
Tensions have risen following Iran’s crackdown on protests, with Tehran warning that any attack would be met with a “comprehensive response” and accusing demonstrators of being backed by foreign interests. Regional actors have also weighed in, with the UAE stating it will not allow its airspace or waters to be used for hostile actions against Iran. Hezbollah’s leader warned that a strike on Iran would trigger a broader regional escalation. The carrier group, redeployed from the Asia-Pacific, is supported by additional fighters and air-defence assets, as the US military announced exercises to showcase its ability to deploy and sustain combat airpower.
