Germany calls for EU to relax Fiscal Rules to focus on defense funds

Germany has called for a reform of the EU’s fiscal rules to allow increased defense spending, a significant shift for the country known for fiscal restraint. Amid the current geopolitical conditions, Germany is pushing the EU to adjust the current fiscal framework to encourage long-term defense investment. This plan echoes Fredrich Mertz’s vision to amend the Constitution to exempt defenses from fiscal limits. EU leaders are set to discuss this action on Thursday. Businesses aiming to align with EU economic agendas can use ESG solutions.

Deloitte paves the way for companies to tie office hours to bonuses

Companies incentivise office hours with bonuses

Deloitte has become the latest American firm to push for a return to the office by linking annual bonuses to office attendance. Staff will be required to work in-office at least 50% of the week, with time spent on-site now factored into performance reviews. This move aims to boost in-person collaboration, with compliance affecting bonus eligibility. Deloitte’s decision follows similar trends among major firms shifting away from pandemic-era remote work practices, prioritizing client needs and employee development.

Sustainable aviation fuel providers advocating for more EU regulations

SAF providers call for EU regulations

Finland’s Neste is halting future sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) projects due to lack of demand, despite significant investment. CEO Heikki Malinen criticized airlines for failing to meet voluntary SAF commitments, relying solely on the EU’s ReFuelEU mandate. SAF is seen as essential to reducing aviation emissions, but its high cost—2.5 times more than fossil kerosene—has deterred airlines. Neste urges the EU to adjust the SAF mandate and consider tariffs on imports to support domestic production amid growing global market uncertainties.

Study finds that reforestation stores more carbon than agroforestry

Research shows importance of both reforestation and agroforestry

New research on indigenous land in Panama found that both reforestation and agroforestry proved beneficial for carbon sequestration and community health. Reforestation showed higher carbon storage data, whilst agroforestry was used for income and food security. The research highlighted that fire was a growing concern for carbon projects and showcased the need for more tailored projects to align with community needs.
