Engie acquires UK power networks in $14B deal to boost grid and decarbonization

French utility Engie announced its largest-ever acquisition, buying UK Power Networks from Hong Kong-listed CK Infrastructure Holdings for £10.5 billion ($14.21 billion). The deal is considered “transformative,” giving Engie a foothold in Britain’s largest power distribution network and expanding its exposure to predictable, regulated revenue streams. UKPN serves southeast and east England, including London, and the acquisition supports the UK’s legally binding 2050 net-zero target. Engie plans €4 billion in asset disposals to fund the purchase. Analysts say the valuation is reasonable and the acquisition will immediately boost earnings while reducing Engie’s dependence on volatile natural gas prices.

EU pushes G7 coordination on maritime services ban for Russian oil

The European Union is seeking coordination with G7 countries before implementing a full maritime services ban on Russia’s seaborne crude oil exports, according to the EU’s sanctions envoy. Proposed on February 6, the ban would target shipping services that support Russia’s oil sales, primarily to India and China, and reinforce the G7 price cap, now at $44 per barrel. EU officials emphasize that U.S. backing is crucial. The measure aims to further reduce Moscow’s revenue from oil amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Details on phasing and inclusion of refined products or LNG remain under discussion.

Heavy rains in Brazil’s southeastern state of Minas Gerais have caused floods and landslides, killing 46 people and leaving 21 missing, according to the state fire department. The cities of Juiz de Fora and Uba were heavily affected, with around 3,600 people displaced. Authorities and volunteers are assisting victims, while the federal government has sent health agents and defense personnel to support relief efforts. Local officials warned residents in high-risk areas to seek shelters as rainfall has reached record February levels. The disaster highlights the region’s vulnerability to intense seasonal rains and the increasing humanitarian challenges posed by climate-related events.

EU imposes controls on Chinese ARA oil after infant formula contamination

European regulators impose new safety measures on arachidonic acid oil from China after contamination incidents affected infant formula across Europe. Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons

The European Commission has introduced new controls on arachidonic acid (ARA) oil imports from China following contamination incidents that sickened dozens of infants across Europe. The cereulide toxin found in ARA oil led major infant formula producers, including Nestle and Danone, to issue widespread product recalls, resulting in significant financial losses. Under the new rules, consignments must include official certificates confirming toxin-free status. The EU emphasized the urgent need to protect public health and prevent unsafe ARA oil from entering the Union. Chinese authorities acknowledged the issue and pledged strict measures to safeguard consumer safety.
