UNFPA Libya

UNFPA Libya

UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA opened its office in Libya in 2012. In 2014, as the security situation deteriorated, UNFPA evacuated its office to Tunisia and started managing operations remotely. Since the lifting of the evacuation status in February 2018, UNFPA has progressively increased its presence in Libya and is currently implementing programs across the East, West and South of Libya, in partnership with several line ministries, municipalities, Libyan civil society organizations, NGOs and UN Agencies.

UNFPA response to Libya’s protracted crisis is built around the humanitarian-development-peace nexus and entails a progressive shift from a focus on service delivery to institutional capacity building programs, supporting policies, systems and standards for service provision, including primary health care centers, women safe spaces, non-formal education and youth centers, adopting a community-based approach that engages youth and women as part of medium and longer term development for peace building and gender equality.
