The 75th Emmy Awards nominations have been announced, and HBO is leading the pack. Succession, the hit drama that recently concluded its fourth season, emerged as the strongest player with a staggering 27 nominations. The show’s outstanding performances by Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, and Sarah Snook earned them nods in the highly competitive Lead Actor and Lead Actress categories. Its network siblings, The Last of Us and The White Lotus, also made a significant impact with 24 and 23 nominations respectively, securing HBO the top three most nominated shows.
Other networks and streaming platforms also received well-deserved recognition. ABC’s critically acclaimed comedy Abbott Elementary gathered eight nominations, including recognition for its talented cast. AMC’s Better Call Saul solidified its status as a fan-favorite with seven nominations, while Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, in its final season, garnered 14 nominations, reflecting its enduring popularity.
However, this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony is set to take place amidst industry turmoil. The ongoing writers’ strike, which began in May, has already disrupted Emmy campaigning, and now the threat of a potential Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strike looms on the horizon. The Emmys hold immense significance as the highest-profile awards in television, and the outcome can shape industry perceptions of the best work being produced. With SAG’s union contract expiring today, the possibility of a strike casts a shadow over the awards season, raising concerns about its impact on the mid-September ceremony.

In support of their concerns, hundreds of A-list actors, including Quinta Brunson, Jennifer Lawrence, Rami Malek, and Brendan Fraser, have signed an open letter pledging their support for a strong contract and vowing to strike if necessary. The negotiations have been shrouded in confidentiality, leaving union members hoping for a fair resolution amidst the anxiety of a potential detrimental outcome.
During the nominations live stream, academy chair Frank Scherma emphasized the commitment to supporting a television industry that stands strong in equity: “We hope the ongoing guild negotiations can come to an equitable and swift resolution.” As anticipation builds for the winners to be announced, the outcome of the negotiations will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the entertainment industry.
The 2023 Emmy Awards is scheduled to be broadcast on September 18th. As the industry navigates the challenges of strikes and the celebration of exceptional television, viewers and industry professionals alike await the unfolding of this year’s event, which will no doubt be a captivating and unpredictable one.
