Norwegian startup Inherit Carbon Solutions, which captures and stores carbon dioxide released when renewable natural gas (RNG) is produced, has inked a monumental deal with Microsoft to provide the tech giant with permanent carbon removal services until 2028.
“We are honored and excited to collaborate with Microsoft, a global leader in technology and sustainability,” said Mike Carpenter, CEO and CO-Founder of Inherit Carbon Solutions. “This agreement validates the importance of our permanent carbon removal solution and highlights the collective responsibility we share in addressing the urgent challenges of climate change.”
The collaboration between Microsoft and Inherit Carbon Solutions “signifies a shared vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future, setting a benchmark for other industry leaders to follow suit,” the startup writes in the press release announcing the agreement.
Carbon removal: A greener approach
Inherit Carbon Solutions, founded in Norway in 2021, is pioneering a new approach to carbon removal by “leveraging wastewater and food waste for the purpose of carbon removal.”
This “sustainable and effective” solution simultaneously tackles carbon emissions and waste management.
To achieve this, the startup partners with renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities that treat organic waste and use it to create energy.
Also known as “biomethane,” RNG is made from organic waste. Its chemical composition is identical to that of natural gas, and this allows it to help decarbonize certain sectors without having to replace current infrastructure.
When an RNG plant converts organic waste into (renewable) energy, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere as a natural byproduct. Inherit Carbon Solutions captures, liquifies, and permanently stores this carbon dioxide, which would otherwise have remained in the atmosphere.

Microsoft acknowledged the significance of this collaboration, with its Senior Director of Energy & Carbon Removal Brian Marrs stating:
“We are excited to work with Inherit towards our sustainability goals and make impactful contributions to global climate efforts.”
As the world faces escalating climate challenges, partnerships like these provide a glimmer of hope. The Inherit-Microsoft collaboration demonstrates that with innovative solutions and concerted efforts, businesses can be at the forefront of positive environmental change. As they should be!
